One man killed and several injured wednesday morning. A fatal accident occurred yesterday morning at the ice house of the American Ice Company, and was the pricipal subject of inquiry yesterday on the street.   A large addition is being built at the ice house, and a force of twenty-six men has been employed there.   They were engaged yesterday morning in the placing the trusses in position at the roof, and five of them were at work upon a staging, which was about forty five feet from the ground.   They were in the act of raising some large timbers to their places when the staging gave way on one end and the men and timbers fell to the ground below with a loud crash, which was heard for some distance up and down the river.   The men had not slightest warning of the giving way of this staging and were unable to save themselves by clinging to the building.
As soon as they saw what had happened the other workmen rushed
to the assistance of those who had fallen and extricated them from
the timbers and boards which had fallen upon and about them.  

It was found that Joseph Hammond of South Brewer, had been instantly killed, his skull having been crushed in by a piece of timber falling upon it.   His remains and the wounded men were taken to the boarding house near by.   The deceased leaves   a widow and seven children to mourn his loss.   He is spoken of as an industrious and intelligent man and was well liked by all who knew him.

Thomas Vessar, who lives on Front Street in this city, received some
severe internal   injuries by a heavy piece of timber falling upon his
abdomen.   It is thought that he cannot recover from his injuries,
although there is a small chance for him.   Last night he recognized
his wife and took some nourishment, but he is in a very critical
condition.   He has a wife and four children.   He formerly resided
at Great Works, but has lived here for some time (missing words)
becoming helpless and he wanted a job where there was less danger.

Fred Felker a young fellow living at North Carmel, also received
serious injuries. His elbow was shattered badly and he complained
of being hurt about his back, from which he felt the worst effects.  
The doctors did not anticipate any serious results from Felker's
injuries but he was placed in bed as soon as possible and was under
the immediate charge of Fred Stevens, the boarding house keeper,
who was indefatigalble in his efforts to alleviate the sufferings of all
the wounded men.

Frank Kelley, of Carmel a man of perhaps 48 years the foreman had
his knee cap broken into four pieces and was bruisd considerable but
seemed to be suffering less than the other men and to have an iron
constitution.   He was sent to his home in Carmel on the noon train.

Patrick McNally of York Street, presented a collection of cuts and
brusises all over this face and his hip was also bruised, while he
complained of injuries to his back.   He lay half unconscious for two
hours and was then sent to his home.   He has a wife and child.
City Marshal Whitney was on the scene early to investigate the cause
of the accident and was satisfied that no blame rested upon any one
and decided that no inquest was necessary.

Foreman Kelley said that he was satisfied that the staging was strong
enough and had had more then enough timber upon it that at the time
when it gave way. He thought that there must have been some flaw in
the plank.

Mr Albert S Field, who is superintending the construction felt that
accident as severly as any of the men. Five minutes before it occurred
he called out to Kelley and asked him if the staging were secure. "It's
as solid as a brick wall," was the reply.   Then Mr Field started to
climb upon it but, was called to some other part of the work, which
he had just finished inspecting when the crash came. In five minutes
more he would have been on the plateform. The six men, who were
working upon the staging were the men who built it and not one of
them had suggested additional security against accident which had
not been adopted, so no blame can rest anywhere.

Mr Field made generous contributions to the families of the two
Frenchmen and the company immediately assumed all the expenses
of surgical attendane and burial.   The other men at work on the
building were strongly affected by the sad fate of their companions

The pricipal topic of conversation on the street yesterday was the
terrible accident at the ice houses of the Amrican Ice Company, an
account of   which is printed in another column of this paper.   By
the accident one of the best liked and most industrious of our
carpenters met with an awful and sudden death and the event has
cast a gloom over all in the city who heard of it. Mr Hammond lived
in a small house on Brewer Hill, near A.H. Mann & Sons' store, on
Main steet, and at the time of his death was at work during odd
moments on his house, which he had only partially completed. He
leaves a widow and seven children, the oldest but ten years of age.
It was a terrible accident and the sympathy of all in the community
goes out to the family, in one short half day bereft of their only support.

Thomas Vessar, who was so badly injured Wednesday by a fall at
the ice house of the American Ice Company, died yesterday morning
after a night of great suffering.   He leaves a widow and four children
to mourn his loss. the deceased was a good citizen and his death will
be a source of sorrow to his friends and acquaintancs

The funeral of the late Joseph Hammond, who was killed at the house
of the Amercian Ice Company, in East Hampden, occurred yesterday
afternoon from St John's Catholic Church.   The remains were interred
at Birch Hill Cemetary.. (now Mt Pleasant Cemetary)

He was 11 years old when his parents died, he wanted to keep the brothers and sisters together and keep the Hammond home in So Brewer Maine and when he wasn't allowed to do that, he ran away from home and worked from farm to farm until he was old enough to work for the Sabattus Telephone Co in Sabattus Maine Later he found all the brothers and sisters and brought them together
