Almost as soon The Tarantula Keeper's Guide, First Edition was released, the author and his wife, Marguerite, began work on its revision. This resulted partly from a need to correct several errors in the original edition, but mostly because more and more data about tarantulas' biology and care were being amassed.
In the intervening 14 years, the tarantula keeping hobby made immense gains. Many new and different tarantulas were being imported. Most had been only obscure names in ancient tomes when the first edition was being written. However, in the intervening years enthusiasts not only were able to acquire specimens of many of them, but many of these species were being bred by hobbyists around the world. Gradually the basic fact that every species was a little different from every other species, and therefore had different requirements, was becoming obvious. And, that meant that many different ways of keeping tarantulas were being developed and experimented with. Even as this is being written, that experimenting goes on, and the final word has yet to be written on the subject of tarantula care.
The manuscript for the second edition was submitted to Barron's a total of three times before it was accepted. The earlier rejections were based on a number of reasons, some having to do with the manuscript itself, others with financial conditions in the market as a whole. Persistence does pay off, however, and the second edition was released on June 15, 1998.
In an effort to correct any errors that might be found, as well as to keep the second edition current, at least for a reasonable time after its publication, the authors have established a set of after-market support webpages. Readers should check these frequently for important updates.
Readers who find errors or who recognize data which is outdated are encouraged to pass the corrected information on to the authors. Please site specific pages if possible to aid in listing these corrections. When appropriate, contributors will be given credit for their contributions.
You can probably check out a copy of The Tarantula Keeper's Guide, Second Edition from your local public library for free.
It's available for sale "off the shelf" from perhaps one third or more of the pet shops in your area. Most can get it for you by special order if it's out of stock. In addition, the Guide is available by special order from every bookstore (the larger stores may even have a copy in stock), directly from the publisher (Barron's Educational Series) and from any of the Internet based bookstores like Abe Books, Alibris, Amazon.com and BarnesandNoble.com.
